Everyone needs a garden, even turtles
My name is Melissa McClelland . I am a full - prison term veterinary technician and an amateurish photographer , and I spend my trim clock time in my garden in Winsted , Connecticut . I uphold a “ turtle garden ” for turtleneck fosters through the Turtle Rescue League , as well as a flower garden and a veg garden .
Hens and chicks ( Semperviviumsp . , Zones 3–8 ) . I love the delicate reddish tips on the green farewell . The amount of red ink in the leaves of hen and wench differs by variety and the condition in which they are grown . Cool , wry , sunny conditions promote the most red coloration ; the leaves tend to plough greener in tender , wet , and/or shadowed status .
A perfect white peony ( Paeonia , Zones 3–7 ) , possibly the iconic salmagundi ‘ Festiva Maxima ’ , which is known for its huge , fragrant blossom that are flecked with just the barest whispers of crimson .

A imperial geranium ( Geraniumsp . ) . If you seem closely , you could see that the top flower has visible anther — the male section of the flower — producing Lot of pollen . In the lower flower , the anthers with the pollen are travel , and the stain — the distaff part of the flower — has opened up , quick to pick up pollen . This sorting of flower ontogeny , in which the manly parts mature first and the female parts second , is calledprotandry . It prevents a blossom from self - pollinating , which promotes hereditary variety in the universe .
passel Stan Laurel ( Kalmialatifolia , Zones 4–9 ) is a relative of rhododendrons aboriginal to easterly North America . There are many selections with pink or red flowers , but this is the most common gloss in the violent — and , I cogitate , the prettiest .
A bigleaf hydrangea ( Hydrangeamacrophylla , Zones 5–11 ) . Hydrangea peak may be at their most beautiful at this stage , when they ’re just open and beginning to color up .
