Warm November temperatures in Zone 5 can lead to some garden surprises, especially with saffron crocus corms planted in October.
When I compose aboutplanting saffron crocuslast month , I excuse how the corms bloom in surrender . I just did n’t expect them to bloom this fall .
I planted the small bulb in early October during a clock time when the weather had deform cold and a freezing warning was issued . I followed the program line and plant the 10 incandescent lamp almost 4 inch deep , watered them in and covered the area with a light stratum of mulch .
The weather condition did get cold here in Denver , but then it warm up . For the last several calendar week we ’ve had unseasonably lovesome 60 - grade days with a few days warm to almost 70 .

When I implant the orange yellow crocus , I was hoping to see unripe leave egress in springtime , take after by small majestic peak in fall . That ’s why it was surprising to see the leave-taking have already pushed through the mulch and one crocus has blossom .
I quickly clipped the peak so I could dry out the prized stigmas for cooking and then added a thick layer of leaves to serve protect the bulbs from the ardent weather . I also wonder what this meant for the remaining bulbs . How would this affect next season ’s flowers ?
Instead of fretting about the resultant , I got in touching withTerritorial Seed Companywhere I had ordered the saffron . I quickly discover back from one of the client service representative who severalize me the Crocus sativus crocus should do mulct , peculiarly since I ’d already mulched the garden bed .

After doing a little more inquiry on saffron crocus , I discover that some flowers do bloom in fond areas about 6 - 8 week after planting , although sometimes the leave-taking and flower await to seem during the second season .
While the weather remains tender , I may remove some of the mulch to see if I can get any other flowers to bloom before wintertime really does typeset in .
