Making a simple crevice garden
Crevice horticulture is a bit of a course among gardeners at the moment . A crevice garden is built by partially swallow astray , insipid pieces of stone vertically , like the pages of a book , and fill the crack between them with a well - drained soil mixing . Little plants tucked into the cleft have their root point deeply by the rocks on either side , so they become impressively drouth tolerant , and the well - debilitate grime mix ascertain that plants that detest wetness never posture in soggy soil and rot .
Last fall , I want to build myself a crevice garden in my new home in coastal Virginia , but I did n’t have easy access code to the big bland Stone I needed . And then I spied a couple of boxes of punk flooring tile on cut-rate sale at the hardware memory , and I got an idea .
I place the tiles vertically in the grease , burying the ones at the end quite deep so that they could support the whole body structure . The centre one were just deep enough to curb their place until I could fill the spaces in between with grime .

To complete the crack garden , I filled in with a mixture of Baroness Dudevant and gravel , then pinch it with a stratum of gravel mulch . Plants from dry climates get the proficient drainage they crave , while those that want more water can have their roots channelise deeply by the tiles to reach the moist , native , clay dirt below .
This bound , the planted crevice garden is filling in and plant are thriving ! The stain mix has settle some ; I should have waited to plant and top it up with more Baroness Dudevant and crushed rock , but otherwise it looks ripe .
Echinocereus reichenbachii(hedgehog cactus , Zones 5–10 ) can take a lot of cold , but it hates sitting in marshy soil , which we have a lot of here in Virginia . It is thriving — and blooming — in the cleft garden .

Echinocereus dasyacanthus(Texas rainbow cactus , Zones 6–10 ) is fly high as well . The flush is beautiful , and there ’s no need to care about cervid or rabbits piece on it !
Belium minutum(miniature flatness daisy , Zones 5–9 ) is covered with cute , tiny daisy prime . I ’m only afraid that it is so happy it might take over the entire garden !
