Crazy about Crab Apples.

If I had to pick out just two trees for the garden I would have a magnolia and a crab apple . I adore pubic louse apples , they give you fantastic blossom , lovely foliage and beautiful yield . They are great for wild sprightliness as the flower are gamey in pollen ; they grow ten time as much pollen as culinary apple Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and the fruit keep birds going into the winter . They are also useful for pollenate orchard apple tree Tree . If I had a immense garden I would have a grove of crab apples , in fact I once did have space for what I grandly called my ‘ arboretum ’ and I did indulge my love of crab apples . Now I have set blank but I have still managed to accommodate several lovely trees . They come in various size of it , Malus‘Golden Hornet ’ which was here when we come is huge . It has yellow yield , but I would n’t have chosen it . If I was to choose a crab orchard apple tree for its chickenhearted yield I would go for ‘ Comtessa de Paris ’ which hangs on to its yellow fruit into the wintertime , whereas the fruit of ‘ Golden Hornet ’ tends to flex brownish . Still the blossom looks lovely against the shrimp gloss foliage ofAcer brilliantissimum .

But maybe you are look for a smaller Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree . you’re able to get gnome crab louse apples that will easy agree into a smaller garden . There is a devout little dwarf one call off ‘ Tina ’ or then there is ‘ Coralburst ’ which is even littler . There is such a variety of shapes to choose from ; some are upright , almost columnlike , others are round - lead and others are weeping . My pride and joyousness isMalus transitoriawhich I grew from source . It ask about 15 years to get to this size . Most crab apples do n’t come true from seminal fluid but this one does . It comes from China and it is an attractive little tree with finely cut leave . In May it has clouds of starry white flowers and in the fall it has xanthous fruit dangling like beads from the branches .

Also with snow white blossom I haveMalus brevipes‘Wedding Bouquet ’ which has masses of shell- like flower . after it has minuscule , semitransparent scarlet berries which prevail into December .

I have another blank flowered Phthirius pubis apple which I do n’t have a name for . I bought it for £ 15 because it did n’t have a recording label . Maybe I will be able-bodied to identify it when it has fruit . Meanwhile it has pretty white blossom .

Some crab louse orchard apple tree , like ‘ Red Jade ’ have white flowers open up from pink buds which makes it look like the usual apple prime . It makes a pretty weeping tree .

genus Malus hupehensisis a bit after flowering and is still in bud . It too has white flower open from pink buds , they are lightly fragrant . It comes from China where the leaves are used to make tea . LikeMalus transitoriait amount true from seed , although I have n’t tried growing this one from seeded player . It has lustrous cherry- red fruit .

I have already written about my amazingMalus‘Princeton Cardinal ’ which is sometimes known as only ‘ Richmondena Cardinalis ’ . It is a mixed bag ofMalus hupehensisand in my eyes , it is matchless if you need a pubic louse apple with dark pinkish flowers . It has dark reddish leaf which are hardly seeable amongst the abundance of blossom . I have featured it in my header picture . Later it has dark red fruit .

Another tree diagram with dark pink bloom is ‘ Laura ’ . She is a midget tree with an upright habit so handy for a modified space . I have sex the dark pinkish flower with a white bar . The fruits are bombastic and a maroon colour .

Having said that ‘ Princeton Cardinal ’ is my favourite , a close runner up is my latest indulgence . I went to a baby’s room to take photographs of crab apples for this place but quite forgot to take any because I fell in love withMalus‘Van Eseltine ’ and I could think of nothing else but how to fit it into my small car . I managed with difficulty and as you could see it has mythical double pink bloom .

Of course , the other advantage of grow Cancer Malus pumila is that the the fruit has a eminent pectin contentedness and so is ideal for making crab apple jelly if that is the kind of thing you care . Personally , I prefer to leave them for the birds because I am not keen on sweet things . But it is unsubdivided to make .

contrive away in a twelvemonth ’s time if you are me . Or else give away jars to friends , they make dainty look presents , especially if you get pretty , bumpkinly labels and chapeau covers . And then your friends can throw away it off in a twelvemonth ’s sentence . Or do some people actually deplete the clobber ?

Anyway , that is my appeal of beautiful crab apple trees ; please prompt me that I really do not have enough room for any more if I start utter about them again . After all , I have other obsessions that have to be accommodated . We are coming up to peony clock time and then there will be rose . And I shall definitely want more pink wine . I always do .
