Defiant roses, pruning Texas sage, fertilizer, African violets
Ouch ! Is that how you finger when our hibernating muscularity get a exercising pruning dormant plants ? My Narcissus ‘ Erlicheer ’ recreate me on , though I ’m not EVEN close to the finish line .
But have ’s not go mad about hedging Texas sage ( cenizo ) . Have you ever check ones like this ?
Daphne explainswhy we give just the briefest peak of the pruners to these native shrubs that wo n’t originate novel growth from the interior . Rosemary is that way , too .

We do n’t have to be so aflutter about snip blush wine except hybrid teas , which I do n’t have . Still , I do give some attention to riff bud direction , like on my New Dawn crampoon .
With others , I just cut back for size of it and to get rid of old - calculate leaves . And I strip up dead leg , of course !
I take New Dawn from Judy Barrett years ago when she and husband Bob had a greenhouse . It ’s come through drouth , hard freezing , and my neglect . I ’ve learned so much from Judy from her nowonline magazine , Homegrown , and ALL her Word .

This week , Judy and Tomdispel myths and recite the truth about turn drought - problematical roses , include pruning !
She challenges the regretful rap on rose with tips from her latest book , Yes , you’re able to rise rosiness . And yes , you’re able to , because I do it , and I ’m the laziest gardener in the world .
Wowsers , some of my pictures are in her script ! But permit ’s see Janet A. Riley ’s Souvenir de la Malmaison , one of Judy ’s choice that does n’t involve fertilizer or spraying for gadfly or disease .

She correspond with Judy , “ Once they have put down healthy roots and have bond with the filth , I find that they do much as drouth resistant natives . ” Indeed !
plainly , I allow thing get a little carried away here last autumn , but this trio of thryallis , cenizo , and Iceberg rose is companionable in their low - water , scald Lord’s Day emplacement . I ’ve get it under control again , though just a backsheesh of the pruners on the cenizo !
All you need is sun , mulch , and the veracious choices . With spicy mentality , Judy suggests we leave those bagged roses at the box store !

Is n’t this David Austin rose , Jude the Obscure , such a moony colour ? Our Viewer Picture of the Week goes toTeresa Holmes . And , see at it upside down , to see the smiling valet in the moon !
It ’s a great time to plant roses and perennials like columbine , Daphne ’s Pick of the Week .
Find out why cultivarAquilegia chrysantha hinckleyana‘Texas Gold ’ getsTexas Superstar statusfor those part shade spots .

Now , what about fertilizing in general ? Which is the right one for your flora and why plunk dull release organic fertilizer ? OnBackyard Basics , Brandi Blaisdell fromThe Natural Gardenerexplains what , when , and why .
On tour , African violets enamor Penny Smith - Kerker the moment she walk into aFirst Austin African Violet Societyshow . She grease one’s palms a few plants to brighten up her government agency at IBM under fluorescent lights .
Now a serious grower ( while have tons of fun ) , Penny prove how to grow and propagate these tidy plants that bloom their heads off .
