It ’s time again to share with you some of my ‘ special projects ’ which I am plan to focus on this twelvemonth . If you recollect , last twelvemonth I was consumed with raising my exposition chrysanthemum , and in earlier year , I raised in - deepness collections of English Sweet Peas , Belgian Endive , Columbine and alpine primroses . This year , my list is still rather ambitious , but you know me , I may only be able to attempt one-half , or three quarter of the ideas on this list , but what gardener does n’t palpate almighty while relaxing on the sofa while the snow flies outside ? Here then , are some of the project I am severely conceive about undertake in the approaching class : Prize Gooseberries !
My grandparent and parents used to bring up many gooseberries here , as well as their cheeseparing relatives , currant , but over time , they ’ve move on ( well , to be more true , the greenhouse now support where they once grew ) . Making a bit of a rejoinder with partizan today , now thatvirusrust * ( please see long addendum at the terminal of this station ) . while some awe have been die away with White Pine at the greatest peril for White Pine Blister Rust , the gooseberry just might be experiencing a capital of Arizona moment with disease resistive and resistant varieties now being grown in much of New England . With Gooseberries and Currants , do n’t expect these lovely berry to try as the look on the shrub , these are not on the button the most delicious fruit when snack on in the garden . Even for Kyd , it will take some fortitude to overcome the sour tartness of a gooseberry , or the sharp , acidic tang of a dark currant which can lead some to recall a kitty litter box . Let me put it this way – these are not fruits for paw eating out of the garden , but in the right formula , for folded into a sucker with freshly whipped boneheaded , Jersey ointment , or some luscious gooseberry mess , all thickheaded and sharp , spread on a flaky , buttery croissant – discernment develops .
The flavor is more or less , saturnine , but when organize in dished , pickle , preserves , jams and jellies , they are elevated . England , they sure have their devotee , which is why that is where competitive gooseberry bush forms rank along side the artistry of competitive Leek raising . Excellence is measured by size and color , first and foremost . Flavor ? Well , with gooseberry , one must take out any theme of ‘ berry ’ from I intellect . My first encounter with Gooseberries derive as a young kid . in the same garden where I subsist now , of class . plant grow out by the previous chicken henhouse , but never enough to rust – just more thorny than anything else .

There were self - seeded plants here and there appear over the ten , but I have always remove them . It ’s time to re-introduce this one-time fashioned yield plant life now that any fear about white pine rust have been abbreviate . My British Quaker necessitate me when am I going to start upraise some gooseberries , so all signal are point to a gooseberry plot in my future . Besides , the foodie in me is really pining for the new smorgasbord , which can have yield as large as a hen testicle , and new ‘ ancient ’ varieties from Switzerland and Germany with fruits that are blush , purplish , pinkish , golden xanthous as well as gullible .
It ’s time again for me to share what some of my ‘ special projects ’ will be for this coming year . These are more in - depth , if not ‘ deep - dives ’ ( where I really dig in and either collect many forms , or grow a large number of specimen to the finest province of perfection as I can ) . I sometimes ca n’t always get to all of these project , which is probably a unspoiled thing given my metre restraint , but I like to keep dozens of choice opened in the origin of the class .
In the past you may recall some of my more successful in - profundity study like English Sweet Peas , one-year poppy , or Belgian Endive . Most lately , last year , my exposition chrysanthemum undertaking , which consumed much of my year . I will be continuing that project into this year , as well , but in addition to that , I am add together these to the listing ( not all will be finish , but on this snowy night , they are on my brusque list :

The 19th Century Method of raising Clematis in Pots
I go back and forth on this one , but for whatever ground , this appeals to me . I ’ve never considered myself a clematis cat , and I am not sure that I want to raise many of these , but perhaps one or two specimen plants in a large tub , might be interesting . I find out this chapter in a Word of God from 1856 , which inspired me to try growing a splendid tub of clematis .
The New Craze for Shishito Peppers

How these little treats swipe in under my radar , I have no idea . I ca n’t even remember where I first interpret about the Shishito pepper . It was just before Christmas , so I might have been in one of my new Japanese cook books I bought myself , or it was on - line of merchandise , but all I know is that when I name that I read about this craze to my dear friend Rochelle Greayer over dinner party one night , she said ” Oh my God ! My parent are SO into those justly now too ! ” , then I knew something was happening . Maybe the are live for Shishito ’s on the west coast ( or in Colorado , in Rochelle ’s example ) , and they are just taking their time making it to the east , but….all I know is that I think I need to grow some of these apparently tasty , lowly , green capsicum pepper plant that took Japan by violent storm ! They are available from Baker Creek Seeds .
‘ Phloxes in Pots ’
Some of you might have record my mail service on Facebook where I freaked out about not being able-bodied to find ripe seed for annual phlox , but now I have some better multifariousness ( there was once were many sections , a hundred and fifty year ago ) . Mainly , I am speak about Phlox drummondii . But why you might be think ? Again , now , a calendar month later , I am not certain why I was so screwball for the species and it ’s many selections , but I do know that a skilful , perfect harvest of P. drummondii is something I ’ve been lusting for ever since I say about Ruth Stout raise a carpet of them in her first record book , back in 1971 – that summertime when my mammy bought me my first gardening book .

It ’s just not an one-year we see grow well , if not at all . If my source comes in on time ( from the UK ) and if it germinates well , I trust to share a successful bed , perhaps under the espalier apple trees . If not , I may seek these in pots – probably bulb pans .
Gallic Mignonette in Pots
Once again , this 19th hundred straightlaced plant makes an appearance on my projects list ( honestly , it ’s been a bit of a pill , to hear and grow ) . This fourth dimension , I am determined to subdue it , only because I need to experience it ’s sent . Look – along with the Tuberose , Mignonnette is like taking a puff of air of history , as if one could smell out was Abraham Lincoln ’s funeral smelled like ( eww , right ? perhaps not the best model , but you get the idea – maybe , this is what Abe send Mary for Valentines Day perhaps ? ) . Historical scents fascinate me though , and since every decent 19th one C flower store had thin out stems and grass of Mignonette , how could you not desire to experience it ’s perfume ? I ’ve ordered a collection of sweet-smelling violets this yr , to round out that collection , so this will simply enhance the entire scheme of nineteenth century fragrant works in the nursery and abridge flower garden .

Exhibition Dahlias
Now that I ’ve kickstarted this fresh chapter of the American Dahlia Society – the New England Dahlia Society , it should come as no surprise that this was all really just a scheme to order mountain and great deal of dahlia tubers . Consider that done , so expect loads of pic this come year of not only our novel Dahlia pinnata bed , but of our first Dahlia pinnata show at Tower Hill in mid September .
exposition Gladiolus

And , along with dahlias , come glads – perhaps my next passion , since I ca n’t seem to keep my hands off of every old fashioned bulb which deserved a revisit or a makeover , and believe me , no bulb ( or corm ) , deserves this more than the humble beaming . If you do n’t consider me , vamoose the Dutch commercial mixture usable at the glasshouse , shiny ring mail society colour catalogue or from the big box store , and visit a accumulator World Wide Web web site – preferably a gladiolus breeder ( I suggest Pleasant Valley Dahlias and Glads , in CT ) . New glads , and by ‘ new ’ , I intend the single bred grown for exposition in gladiolus show which look nothing like any commercial glad you have seen or suppose . Forget funeral arrangements , cheesy dollar - storage bunch or even glamellas -instead , intend of dark-brown bronze , topnotch - ruffled 5 foot tall wonders — colors like cinnamon , chocolate , black blackberry bush colored eyed forms , or some with pie crusted ruffles show fondness , that each floweret could be a corsage . Do it . consecrate a few , and let me sleep together . I assure you , they are SO deserving it !
Old prissy CarnationsI will keep on to ramp up my collection this year of onetime ( and novel ? ) varieties , if I can ever find them . I suppose that I really demand to get over to the UK , where I could shove some cuttings down my boxershorts , but until then , I demand to rely on Annies Annuals and a few secret sources for what was once , American ’s darling cut flower 100 years ago .
Now , on my “ possibly I ’ll try them ” list

A serious collecting of begonia speciesAfter my talk to the Begonia Society here in Massachusetts last weekend , I think I stimulated some latent Begonia factor not - so - deep deep down of me . So , who know what will happen here , but I would n’t be surprised to see a few dozen unexampled begonias show up on a windowpane mesa , or in the nursery this year .
Vintage Florist Techniques from the Nineteenth CenturyI have been singular about this subject . Think – Downton Abbey flowers I suppose . Back in the mid to late nineteenth century , an organisation or flora or greens , was generally allow for the wealthy , those who own a nursery , and the gardeners who could supply it . I ’m not sure who would have made the arranging , but most likely it was a footman , or a family maid with some skill . This was a metre long before haven and floral foam , before Gerbera , alstroemeria and many of our standard supermarket florist flowers were introduced . rather , damp moss and wire was tucked into a shallow pipe bowl , terrine , or a tiered fruit stand , in which camellias , jasmine , and most any peak gathered in from the glasshouse or conservatory was dress , along with bits of fern and mosses . I am curious about obtain more books and point of reference materials about forcing plants for the conservatory , and I keep discovering chapters on these placement , so I would n’t be surprised to see some of this workmanship seem as a study , here .
My Greenhouse Bulbs raise in Martian Regolith SimulantA new hire at work ( Samir ) introduced me to this when he discovered that I liked plants . I could n’t believe that I never attend this , have you ? Apparently NASA and more often than not , scientists are encouraging Americans to try out raising plants in thisMartian Regolith Simulant . You make this stuff and nonsense up . Regolith Simulants are fundamentally phoney dirt , mimicking the soil term find oneself on either the moon , or Mars . Surely the stark science project theme for your kids , if you’v been look for someway to touch base your works passionateness with them , right ?

Go on , if you have n’t yet , go Google ‘ Martian Regolith Simulant ’ , and you will find everything from source for soil , to complete kits . There are also all sorts of on - line community for folks who are playing around with this soil . The soils seem to be coming from a volcano on Hawaii , and not from the Moon or from Mars , for that thing , which can be a little unsatisfying , but hey – if you are bulb accumulator and complaining about not being able to find pumice , this might be an alternative , and something that will certainly enhance your next presentation at the NARGS or PBS merging . Let the scientists act with trying to lift food on Mars , I am going to see if I can rear Narcissis cantabricus when I call there !
Exhibition and Japanese Chrysanthemums againYeah , this goes without say , but oh….at a monumental scale this year . Just hold off !
marigold – string on strings , or lift every sort that I can findI may still do this , but lose interest in it slenderly .

Alpine plant in raised vegetable containers .
- Addendum to GooseberrysIan adding this because my admirer Mike Huben sent me this tone fro Ecuador , where he is now living :
Matt :

For some unknown reasonableness , I ca n’t send a input , so here are a mates of quiddity .
I ’m a picayune surprised that you wrote at least twice about gooseberries carry a computer virus that affects pines : rust fungus are not viruses . And later you did talk about the rust fungus fungi . Here ’s an excerpt from the wikipedia clause on gooseberries :
“ Like most Ribes , the gooseberry is an alternating host for blank pine blister rust fungus , which can stimulate serious damage to American white pines.[11]Gooseberry cultivation is thus illegal in some areas of the U.S and quarantine are in place to help control this disease . Maine law nix the planting and cultivation of currants and gooseberries in most of southerly Maine , and prohibits the planting and culture of European black currant and their loan-blend anywhere within the commonwealth . ”

I ’d be peculiar to make love why you say “ now that virus fear have been abated with White Pines ” : I have n’t heard that and would like to know .
Mike , first of all , you are right . There is no alibi for me neglect that fact , and I should have fuck better – apology really was , it was late at Nox , and i felt that I had better carry something , since I had miss an intact hebdomad of posts ! Plus , as I wrote it , I knew that I would have to go back and correct it ini the morning – I was working off of my remembering , that A. Gooseberries and Currants are again show up in mail order catalogs without the shipping limitation for Massachusetts , and B. I knew that I had study about the rusting concerns being at least , reduced or lifted for one reason or another . Now , I had to go do some homework to confirm this .
Here are a few facts which i institute both on the Cornell.edu land site , and from other sources .

HISTORY OF WHITE PINE BLISTER RUST and GOOSEBERRY / CURRANTS ( Ribes )
White Pine Blister Rust ( WPBR ) is a decimating fungus which infects white pine ( Pinis strobes ) in the North East . It also infect the genus Ribes , which includes Gooseberries and currant . Many states have prohibited establish Ribes for most of the 20th century due to this relationship , as the White Pine is a important woodland and wood tree in North American timber .
In the 1900 ’s , state and federal laws outlawd the finish of currants and gooseberries to forbid the spread of the withering snowy pine blister rust ( Cronartium ribicola ) . Many of can commemorate seeing these laws briefly explained in most any fruit Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree catalog where consumers were often told that they could only plant gooseberries or currant if they lived a certain distance from the near white pine .
The federal proscription was rescinded in 1966 , but a few New England states continue the ban , yet only for shameful currants .
In 2003 , the Department of State of New York modified its ban to allow commercial cultivator as well as home growers to grow raw cherry-red currant bush , gooseberry and immune or resistant varieties of bleak currant .
As for Ribes grossularia , there are two type the American ( Ribes hirtellum ) and the European ( Ribes ovum - crispa ) . American types have smaller fruit , and are roll in the hay to be more resistive to mildew . Overall , they are known as healthier plants , being more productive . The varieties suggested as the fine for base growing are : ‘ Poorman ’ . Oregon Champion ’ , Hinnonmaki Red ’ , ‘ Hinnonmaki Yellow ’ , ‘ Captivator ’ , and ‘ Pixwell ’ , the variety most commonly available as it propagates easy .
The ok European varieties , which will have much larger yield and far ripe relish , are:‘Invicta ’ ( best flavor ) , Leveller ’ , ‘ Careless ’ , former Sulfur ’ , ‘ Catherina ’ , and ‘ Achilles ’ .
Cornell University name source for these plantshere :
1 , There are Modern ‘ Immune ’ multifariousness now available , so the restrictions have been countermand in most state except Main.2 . There are studies looking at a Modern mutation fungus , which does infect the Modern ‘ immune ’ varieties . ( figures ) , but it can be controlled with fungicide applications .
Mr. Hueben also noted that I drop a line this:‘Hummingbirds do not occur in Africa : the biologic eq there are the Sunbirds , and the Ericas there have credibly co - eveolved with them . ”
Mike , skilful catch ! I will say that I consider twice about saying ‘ hummingbird erica ’s , as I am well cognisant , as a birder and a life amateur bird watcher , that someone would take in that ! Here ’s why I used hummingbird alternatively of Sunbird . The greenhouse , which I forgot to list as a origin , either has trademarked their erica ’s as Hummingbird Heaths ™ or lean them as Hummingbird heather and heather . Naturally , I many tube-shaped blossoms from South Africa , peculiarly many of the geophytes you experience that I collect ( lachenalia , clivia ) are all pollinated by the sunbirds find out in the ness area of South Africa . I probably should have made this clear to readers , even though most wo n’t get the error , and yes – most , if they do grow any of these Erica ’s either in their Californian gardens , out of doors in the south west , or even in our country of the far , cold-blooded northeastern United States , will indeed only see hummingbirds visit their plants ( well , possibly not in the northeast , since they will be blossom in the winter under looking glass in a nursery ! >
As always , I welcome your billet and geekyness , Mike !
go for everything is working out terrifically for you in your new adventurous life in Ecuador – your plant are doing well in our garden , if they can pull through our -16 below zero temporary last night!Matt
