GPOD on the Road: Fall at Heronswood Garden, Part 3

A perennial garden at this botanical garden in the Pacific Northwest is just exciting with fall colors as it is during summer’s peak

We ’re end this week back atHeronswood Gardenin Kingston , Washington with Cherry Ong . A pair hebdomad ago , I shared her exposure from two unlike areas in this gem of the Pacific Northwest : Part 1 in the Bog GardenandPart 2 outside the Heron House . However , Cherry saw way more at Heronswood and air over many more photo for our use . Today , we get to research all of the amazing specimens in Heronswood ’s Perennial Garden , and tomorrow we ’ll be back with Cherry to learn about her time spent with Heronwood ’s Assistant Director , Rizaniño ‘ Riz ’ Reyes .

Some of the most exciting perennial you may implant for your fall garden are , of class , stag ! Just this week on GPOD we ’ve partake so many exciting ornamental sess in endlessly shadiness of red orange , yellowish and green .

This two - toned beauty appear to be Little Miss midget maiden grass ( Miscanthussinensis‘Little Miss ’ , Zones 5–9 ) , which looks to be holding on to its red flower into late October rather of transform into downy seed head .

Aconitum ’s openhanded cluster of bright over-embellished blossom have made an appearance on GPOD a few times this fall , and it ’s intelligible why .

So many peachy people of color and textures come together in this perennial garden , utilizing the unbelievable late - time of year blooms that are available in the Pacific Northwest as well as owing leaf options .

A twain of my societal medium friends have wondered about the melding of rhododendron and hydrangea in this photo?—What an interesting specimen , indeed ! I ’m thinking this is a potpourri of rough - leaved hydrangea ( Hydrangea aspera , Zones 7–9 ) base on the shape and people of color of the leave-taking , though the burnish is throwing me off a little ( I often see rough - allow hydrangea leaves described as “ bleary ” ) .

Considering the renowned horticulturist Dan Hinkley helped to set up Heronswood in 1987 , and is still involved in this amazing space , I would n’t be surprised if this delicious sort is something not readily usable in nurseries and garden gist .

I always appreciate the Cherry captures and shares the bigger characterisation as well as the tiny detail that make a garden magical .

While most of us seek out peak time of year in public gardens , it ’s great to be reminded what we ’re missing in the fall . As I mention in the intro , we ’ll be back at Heronswood with Cherry tomorrow , and we ’ll be getting a look at another side of public gardens that some of us may not be utilizing enough .
