I take a mickle of hardwood cuttings lastwinter , some from my garden , some from neighbour . So , what has survived ? Not a lot , to be honest . More than ever before , however , so I should n’t be too negative about it , but less then I ’d hop .
achiever :

Rosa ‘ danse de feu ’ . Four of these made it through the months since accept the press clipping back at the end of November last class . I ’ve positioned them where I require them in Border 2 but have left them in their pots for now , I want them to develop a vigorous root web before planting them out properly . Two are now pretty big plants , blossom too , these were in the greenhouse for rooting .
The other two are pot up and doing nicely , they were outside for rooting . I remember I ’ll leave them in their pots over the wintertime and plant them out early next yr .
I ’m reasonably pleased with this riposte overall , I ’d say about 50 % success rate for these rosaceous newspaper clipping . I have some other roses I bought recently that I now feel confident about increasing with this method .

Weigela . Two of these rooted successfully . I potted them up a while back , and this calendar week pot them on to larger pot , turn over them a little prune for contour . Both are produce fresh top growth and both have an first-class origin meshwork .
Success pace was low though , I think there were well over 10 of these weigela cuttings , so at best 20 % . Still , the survivor are salutary piffling plant , and free too . I ’ll keep them in mess till next bound before deciding what to do with them . I may involve to pot them on to larger great deal once more .
For the next few press cutting , I was planning a taradiddle of chasteness , a affected role wait for antecedent to show in identification number through the bottom of the pot . Very virtuous . In a rush of circularise pedigree to the pass , however , I was ineffective to resist turn over several out . In my defense mechanism there was a fate of top growing , and signs of root word at the bottom of some expectant pots . I conceive I would be good enough . I had foolishly put multiple varieties of cutting off in the same bombastic heap . Several of those miscellanea amount to nothing , I ended up with 3 miscellany front like successful cuttings .

Given my rush to de - pot I had no choice other than tipping them all out at once . Here goes …
Perovskia . There were two viable looking stems , and both had a decent although far from telling lot of roots . I ’ve potted them on in 1.5 litre batch , using multi - purpose compost . I give the stem a turn of a trimness to advance a serious human body and to reduce a little the stress on the plant life from being moved on .
Eleagnus quicksilver . Just one stem stay from this group . It has rooted well . I ’m looking forrard to engraft this out next spring , for a bit of evergreen coloring and interest . Not sure where yet …

Hydrangea ‘ anabelle ’ . Two viable stems , both settle down well , it turned out . Duly pot on .
Abelia grandiflora . There was just one stem with good top growth , include some new leaves , normally a good signaling of rooting . Sadly , this is the one thinning in this group where my enthusiasm has n’t paid off . There were no roots . I apologise profusely for disturb it and hastily repotted it . I surmise it will sulk and then die off . Oh well .
Phyoscarpia opulifolius This blighter had a very telling root connection , best of the bunch . It bear witness how random the “ bottom of the pot root psychometric test ” is . ( If you descry this as a desparate attempt to retrospectively justify my restlessness , dead right ! ) . Where was I. Ah yes , there were a span of weedy roots emerging from the stool , which might have been offputting to a less foolhardy disseminator . within , though , a bona fide forest of lovely roots .

Cornus alba . These were doing nicely , heaps of top growth . I ended up with four good industrial plant , with equal stem , I ’ve potted them all up . No idea where I ’m run short to put them in the spring . I might plant a few in the front garden with the intention of coppicing them down to the earth each twelvemonth , rather than rent them grow into big bush . That should mean I get a near brush of bright ruddy stem that will provide some interest in the winter . If I play my card right , I can also use all those lop stem as supports for perennials coming back into growth .
nonstarter :
These are mixed clump . Some of these teased with a flush of top growth then fade away , or root but then give way for some reason , probably my mishandling , who love . Some did nothing at all , utter sticks from the off . It ’s a pity , there were some nice bush I hope to get from these stems , all from a garden raid lead from an entreaty I put out on our local Freegle board . I ’m get to do the same again this wintertime . Shameless !

The far-famed failures were as follows :
I recollect I can down my equipment , cuttings compost and technique for betters hardwood cutting success , so I will definitely look for more this get along winter .
I ’ll be back !
