This summer , my bivouacking pal Cyndi and I make up one’s mind we want to do a “ enlistment ” of campgrounds in northern Illinois , near our homes . We have limited resources and time , so I needed to pick out the right touch for us .
Admittedly , my first option wound up being a great place to go back to , but only in the fall . We happened to make it there the hottest weekend of the year and wound up miserable and exhausted , restless and overwhelmed .

The Right Distance From Home
In the yesteryear , I ’ve always drop dead far - flung and exotic , but we only had weekend this summertime for our camping escapade – so I needed to ensure that the grounds we chose would be within a secretive enough distance to be worth it .
If you do a Google search for “ state Mungo Park in [ insert your part of the Department of State ] , you ’ll believably get way more results than you want or involve . you could take the route I did and select one – anyone – and use the web site ’s search choice for other campgrounds in the area . It will take quite a bit longer , though , than scrolling through and looking at the addresses of the grounds .
I reduced the search by run to Google mapping and putting in a specific distance from nursing home . I know that anything within about 50 nautical mile would be suitable – less than 2 hours – so that ’s what I did . There were still more campgrounds than I could prefer from , so I move onto the next phase of my search : the right amenity .

grow up , every time we go encampment , my family select campsites with both electric and water supply heart at the web site . As an adult , before I set out expect myself into sites – and after asking a set of interrogation of a hapless park commando – I mechanically assume they had these unless marked “ primitive . ” As it turns out , that ’s more of a Florida tenting thing than an Illinois . We have yet to retrieve a campsite nearby and offered both electricity and weewee .
So , before you select the encampment you require , be sure to check the creature comforts at the single internet site , not just the campgrounds . you may set what will be available by their categorisation .
The Right Activities
Because I ’m a offset and hiker and my encampment buddy is n’t , I knew we take a combining of activities available to be used that we both could relish – together or independently . The Right Spot at the Campgrounds
At our 2nd campsite this season , we drove in along a long row of site out toward the beach . As we approached our spot for the weekend , we saw how much tincture versus sun we saw on the two sides of the road . “ Of course , ” I mention as we attract into a full sunny spot . It was hot and humid , so , like our former camping area , we ’d gotten the one without enough shade .
The site was , however , handily located near the shower theater . Not too close ( so we could n’t smell it ) , but close enough we could walk there even in an emergency . And , as it turn out , within a couple of hours , our camping area turned into the unadulterated slur – as we had predict from the website when we chose it .
Most website provided images for each campground or maps that bespeak treeline , the shadiness of a given site , etc . After ignoring these for our first situation , I 100 % recommend using these as you pick out your own . You might wind up up as we did in an unbearably , completely cheery spot during the hot weekend of the year . And trust me , heating debilitation is n’t fun .
The Perfect Camping Spot is Absolutely All It’s Cracked Up to Be
Ultimately , the other campgrounds we visited wound up being perfect for us .
