What to do with a plant that has a dead center

Lift the entire plant
That cluster of utter rhizomes in the center takes up outer space and wo n’t let new growth sprout . Your best bet is to raise the intact thud . Do this in other spring , when the foliage is still small so you could see what you ’re doing .

Slice it into sections
With the glob out of the ground , use yourspadeto slice it into four to six surgical incision , as if you ’re cut back a pie . With asoil knifeorsmall saw , cut off the dead “ tip ” of each wedge , designate in the pic above , and dispose it .
If the clump is too big for you to lift out whole , you could relax it all the way around , then cut the cluster into wedge - shaped chunks and take them out one at a time .
Replant the divisions
Of course , you could divide these ball down to much smaller pieces , but you ’ll get a lot more impact if you replant a clod about the size of the one I ’m holding in the photo below , which is or so 6 inch across . Plant it at the same level it was grow before , and keep it well - watered the first year .
