Dealing with deer and making a beautiful garden

Today ’s picture come from Geni Hiestand .

I live in the Sierra foothill in Grass Valley , California . Our front chiliad was a patch of weeds and clay dirt when my husband and I moved in . We get it on Japanese art and gardens , so I adjudicate to make our front yard into something Japanese - like and have it be low maintenance and deer resistant . We are surrounded by 5 acres of timberland , and the cervid think that this is their front yard as well . notice things that they do n’t like was challenging . I have our driveway line on both side with Provence lavender . I employ lots of different genus Berberis , because the deer wo n’t touch them and they are drought resistant . They also impart color to the garden after all the sword lily and peonies have finished flower .

We started with pea plant gravel and brought in rocks that were on the belongings to forge a Japanese look . We create mounds of violent and wooly thyme ( Thymus praecox , Zones 4–9 , andThymus pseudolanuginosus , Zones 5–8 ) . Elfin thyme ( Thymus serpyllum‘Elfin ’ , Zones 4–8 ) works really well around the rock and roll placement — better than traditional moss with the acute heat that we have here .

I have sex peony ( Paeoniasp . , Zones 4–8 ) , but the deer do n’t . A perfect match !

Peony ‘ Pastel Splendor ’ is one of the Itoh loanblend , describe for Nipponese breeder Dr. Toichi Itoh , who hybridized herbaceous paeony with tree peonies to produce this group of peonies with expectant , beautiful flowers and very vigorous growth .

One sunrise I discovered a salientian prince on one of the unopened peony blush , and he waited for me to get my camera !

Osakizuki Japanese maple ( Acer palmatum‘Osakizuki ’ , Zones 6–8 ) is so gorgeous in the declension with its shiny ruby-red leaves .

A ruby dogwood ( Cornus florida‘Ruby ’ , Zones 5–8 ) also has impressive declension colour .
