Rather than worrying about barrels and flues and infrastructure , it ’s meter to bulge out making well-heeled biochar !
As Iwrote Friday , I ’m attempting to enrich a lump of lousy dirt in the middle of my front yard . My nutrient forest project is suffering in that area .
A not unimportant part of that attempt involve biochar . As even readers lie with , I ’m an obsessional andextreme composter .

Yes , I am an extreme composter . Get my bookand you may be too .
I detest letting anything go to permissive waste – so when I see neighbors cutting down trees or throwing out yard dissipation , I ask them to send it my way . Last twelvemonth , two different house dumped piles of oak branches over my front fence for me .
They ’ve sit there long enough that the blue layers have decomposed , enriching the footing beneath – but the top was perfect for burning :

Yes, I am an extreme composter.Get my bookand you can be too.
So … burn I did . When I burned , I let the fire get down to good hot coal , then glance over out the still uncharcoalified pieces of stick and log and made them a initiation of a new fire , then put out the rest coals with the hose .
I got this :
In the terminal , that stick pile yielded a 1.5 glass can ’s worth of biochar .

Biochar is a nutrient - agree amendment that should be arrant for Florida ’s sandy dirt . My next step is to mix this char into a membranophone of wet compost and permit it soak in microbic life and nutrients . Then I ’ll circulate it around and mulch over it .
I ’ve seen all kinds of more complicated way to make this stuff . I prefer just building fire and putting them out . If I ’m not making gentle biochar , I wo n’t be making any ! Besides , the last affair I involve is another corner of the yard being squander with a Char - group O - Matic SuperDrum or something .
Are you using biochar in your garden ? Any chance ? Let me know !
