In praise of the cleome
Today Alan Weisberg is share one of his favorite flowers with us : cleome(Cleome hassleriana , one-year ) .
From the foothills of Haycock Mountain in rural southeastern Pennsylvania I ’ve been garden for 40 year on three estate of what was once a 100 - acre farm , with a fieldstone dwelling house and barn build up in 1741 . The regaining of thestructures , landscape gardening , summation , and vegetable andflower gardenshave yielded almost as many failures as successes , with raft of deterrent example learned .
Of the more than 100 varieties of plants , vegetables , shrubs , and trees on the dimension , my favourite plant life are clearly theCleome hassleriana , or spider flower . Theseannualsbloom profusely from early summertime through tardy autumn , are very hardy , and are deer and rabbit insubordinate . In summation , the bees , butterflies , and smallest garden birds fuck them .

Great formass plantingsin river pebbles , crushed rock , or almost any dirt , cleomes reseed themselves every year with a high-pitched grade of reliableness .
Theseedpodsare plentiful and well stripped at the terminal of the season for planting elsewhere or endue to like - tending horticulture protagonist . Large flower point are commonly pink , lavender , and white , though a red motley is also available .
I ’ve found it far more advantageous to scatter the seeds on a scratched bottom in early wintertime rather than to wait until spring for planting . They need the insensate temperature photo to check the seminal fluid pelt for successful sprouting . And it ’s better to light adjure them into the grime rather than to breed them with soil .

well growing 3 to 5 feet tall , cleomes bed full sun but will toleratepartial tone , though you should be prepared to support them , as they will bend down to reach out for more sunlight .
Colorful , aromatic , critter resistant , and easy grow — it make good sentience to add a few Cleome to your landscape . I ’m confident you will not be disappointed !
