I ’m a big fan of poppies . I love the way they combine touchy , papery petals with a toughened , authentic disposition . While looking through my photos recently , I pulled these images of some of my best-loved poppy .
Called “ corn poppy ” for its habit of popping up as a weed in food grain battlefield in Europe , Papaver rhoes(annual ) is a weed most of us would be felicitous to have in our gardens . Like many poppies , it does n’t transplant well , so it is best originate by sowing the seeds directly on the stain airfoil early on in the outpouring or in the dip . It will grow rapidly in the cool bounce conditions , peak , and then die , but not before expend many seeds that — if you do n’t have too much mulch — will develop again to impart on the show for next year .
Oriental poppy ( Papaver orientale , Zones 3–7 ) is a hard , improbably long - lived perennial . Give it a minuscule sunlight , and it will reward you with endearing blossom each spring .

The Maroc poppy ( Papaver atlanticum‘Flore Pleno ’ , Zones 5–10 ) is one of the easiest plant to originate I bed . Give it full Dominicus and decent drain , and it will blossom more or less nonstop all season long . It sometimes lead a break if the temperatures get too raging in the middle of the summer , but then it picks up again , blooming as before long as coolheaded weather arrives . It also self - sows softly for me but has never become a weed .
lolly seminal fluid poppy ( Papaver somniferum ) are another annual best sown in the autumn or other springtime , as they hate being transplanted . But give them subject grease and a nice cool spring , and they will grow and blossom like crazy . There are many different types ; this is one of the so - called peony flowered types , with fully double blooms and , in this character , dramatically fringe petal edge .
Another bread seed poppy , this one is of the variety ‘ Flemish Antique ’ , which boast unbelievable double blooms of flower petal that search hand - painted .
