Using a soil sifter , I sift my dirt and compost for my potting mix .
I cleaned out the master compost bin this week and am really felicitous with the results . I ’m doing some seeding and repotting these day , and the compost has countenance me to prepare what I think of as the potting soil of the gods . industrial plant and seedlings grow particularly well in this mixing , and I even give my friends bags full of the stuff .
My potting soil recipe is simple : equal parts of sift dirt and sifted compost mixed thoroughly . The only way to make this clobber better is to let it mature a bit . Two weeks after it ’s mixed , the resultant soil is fully chemically fighting and alive with all the microorganism that makesoilfertile .
Garden supply centers often deal bags of planting mix , but those bags usually contain only constitutional material like ground up tree bark . The planting premix are aseptic , which can be honest for some seeding situation , but otherwise they are a miserable substitute for the real thing . The rationality they control only organic materials is mostly because that material is comparatively light in exercising weight , whereas filth is fairly heavy . If the potting mixture manufacturers put dirt in their intermixture , the cargo ships costs would jump considerably , and they ’d need to charge more for their product .

Commercial nurseries also often use constitutive - only potting mixes because they are sterile and because they are much less expensive . When I worked in a snooty upscale nursery in California where they raise a lot of their own plants , they never skimp on this detail . There was a crowing area out back where dirt was sifted and sterilized before being mix with various constituent materials to ready the potting mixes used in their mature operation . When crap is integrate with constitutive fabric it provides not only a mineral fraction , but also an significant electrochemical capacity that makes the flow of nutritive materials with the grease solution more rich . When I do n’t havesuitable compostto use , I do corrupt bag of planting admixture , but then I always tally a lot of dirt to the mix before I use it .
I have three stead I make compost with our kitchen waste and another peck where I put the giving locoweed and branches from the garden work . For a month or two , I pile in all the kitchen refuse and lots of the small garden dope in one situation , and then I switch home and pile in one of the other locations . The down time , when I ’m not add cloth , is the main cookery phase , and I commonly turn the pile a few time during the next two month to allow O to enter the pile .
Then , when the resulting compost is really fudge and dry , I am ready to strain it . I use the sift out bigger pieces around the bases of the yield trees and the fine sift material is used in realize potting soil and to enrich the soil in planting bed . I think the secret of compost is the high amounts of humic acids that are produced when organic material like sure-enough plant share are moulder in an aerobic style .
