Roll With It… Or On It
I ordinarily start my source indoors in mid - March . At some point during The Great Pause of COVID , I read an article about how to repurpose composition board toilet newspaper roll into seed loving cup . When seedlings are ready for the garden , you but swallow the intact cardboard loving cup , and it disintegrate in the territory . whizz , right ? Last springiness seemed like a just time to judge it . The sewer report shortage was mostly over , and my family line of six leaves empty drum roll stack like Jenga block on the back of the lavatory as if it ’s game night , so I considered it meant to be . So I set to work make each roll into two little seed cupful . I filled them withpotting mixand added the seed while my young girl label eachplant markerwith the 30 - ish different types of come we ’d chosen . eventually , we rig them into a big tray in the sunroom .
Now , I should note three thing here . First , our family adopted an endearing young COVID kitty , Juno , who can be a bit of a rascal . Second , Juno ’s most favorite place in all the world is the sunroom . She loves to lie in front of the big window , watch out the razzing , sleep in the sun , and make uncanny cat noises at the chipmunks through the glass . Third , this was the first prison term we were test out a new germination mat under ourseed tray . We fancy we would be safe to set about our seeds in this sunny space like all the year before since our other kat , Birdie , has never bothered with them . We were wrong , friends . We were incorrect .
The first day , Juno whiff at the cum tray and gently cream at several . The second day , Juno walk through the come tray , swishing her tail , knocking over the composition board electron tube , shed some potting mixture , all while look us drained in the optic as if to say , “ Is this going to be a problem ? ”

The third day , I came down the stairs in the morning to obtain that every single tubing had been tipped over and spill in the tray . By now I was beyond annoyed as I haphazardly pressed the mix back into random containers and guess at which seeds were which , since the plant life markers were scattered across the base .
The 4th day , we found Juno elongate out in the seed tray fill a nap in the Lord’s Day . On the dainty cozy germination mat . Covered in potting premix and germ . whole contentedness . She slow- blinked at me a few times to let me have sex that this was how it was . So we threw the seeds out and decide to grease one’s palms plants from the Fannie Merritt Farmer market instead .
Making these biodegradable seed cups is actually quite easy!
Cut a toilet newspaper tube in one-half . On one end , cut four ¼-inch slits space evenly around the opening . Fold the flaps in like the bottom of a box , fill with potting mixture , add a seed or two , spritz with water , make the hand motility of “ I ’m view you ” to your cat , and voilà ! DIY seed cups .
When Jamie is n’t trying to squirm her qat from the seed tray , you may find her curl up with a dear script and a methamphetamine hydrochloride of wine pretending she ca n’t get wind her four kids and husband asking what ’s for dinner .
