It branches profusely , and its stems climb by aery roots , growing up to 33 feet ( 10 m ) long . The stems are green , with articulation generally having three ribs and 1 to 3 conical spines per areole . The joint can reach up to 4 feet ( 1.2 m ) in length . The margins are horny and ruffle , with wings measuring up to 2 in ( 5 cm ) widely . The spines are grayish - browned to black and can grow up to 0.4 inches ( 1 cm ) long .
