“ A ball of living energy , made from multiple color of Harlan F. Stone swirling about , ” is how Devin Devine describes his late garden art initiation , a large 4 - substructure sector made of fragment of stone stage in a circular eddy of waves . His company , Devine Escapesin Effort , Pa. , particularize in using natural stone to project alone and inspiring outdoor landscape . Artistic projects such as this one make up about half of his work , with the rest of his time devoted to building flagstone patios , walls , and other types of hardscaping .

Before starting his company in 2007 , Devine work as a mason to pay the bills . After practicing the trade for many years , he begin express his artistic imagination through stone , making hand - crafted spheres , vase , and other garden sculpture . The piece point here is Devine ’s third sphere , a cast he see especially alluring . “ The empyrean is about as universal of a shape as it gets . There ’s a primal response to it , some fascination I ca n’t really describe . I ’ve been drawing and paint sphere - shaped objects for years . Now I build them too , ” he allege .
Devine creates his spheres and other sculptural pieces using ironical stacked Harlan Fiske Stone , unremarkably leftover fragments of flagstone that stay after he build patios and walls . As I gained experience working with stone , I figured out how it was done . The thick , somewhat crimson of the plum - colored Harlan Fiske Stone were found on the client ’s property , ” enunciate Devine .
Devine ’s stack rock spheres , which are typically held together with no mortar or cement , are a challenge to assemble , he admits . “ The risk of collapse is there , especially at the half - style point . And get the flow just right is not something I take very lightly . This type of project does call for a bit of play , but overall it really is not so much whimsical or spontaneous , but rather attentive and measured . ”
