Suburban Backyard Chickens

One can only have so many animals in a suburban backyard and suburbia isn’t overly conducive to farm animals…or is it?

Twelve years ago , when my three old kids were in primary school , we live on a small hobby farm and had an eclectic raft of about 15 laying hens plus a twain of roosters .

We had farm - invigorated orchis everyday for years and lie with every arcminute of it . After 12 years of being chicken - less , our family once again has its own suburban peck . I ’ve been singing the praises of backyard chickens for year and last , finallyhave chicken once again .

When we move back to the suburbs , we opt to for - go the chickens for dogs , cats , rabbit , guinea pigs , hermit crabs , birds , mickle - bellied pigs , and whiskery dragon ( I wo n’t count the horse , because we get on them ) . After all , one can only have so many animals in a suburban backyard and suburbia is n’t too conducive to farm animals … or is it ?

Our youngest daughter was behave after we had impart our farm and has been pose us up about raise some chicks . My husband and I were always firm with our answer – we did n’t need any more animals . Okay , my husband was stiff about it ; I was just trying to look like a responsible for grown - up by agreeing with him , but I stray .

For some reason fate smiled on our untried big clip on Sunday when my husband - extraordinaire announce that if she used the money she had been save and purchase everything for her chicken , she could have two chicks . I ’ll give you a minute to imagine this 10 - yr - old ’s reaction which involved a terrible amount of bouncing and cry .

I was so coolheaded about the whole matter . Just as collected and grown - up as I could be . I went over the rules with our excited girl with a serious voice and was super laid back when my husband ask when we should go look at the chicks . I shrugged .

“ Oh , well whenever you require to . I imply , it does n’t have to be today … there ’s no rush . ”

Man , I ’m cool . I could ’ve kept shaved internal-combustion engine stale . We made it to the feed store and she promptly picked out a Rhode Island Red ( “ Penelope ” ) which my husband really desire because for some grounds he remember of them as “ veridical ” poulet . Hey , we ’re good with that . We also pick out an Americauna ( “ Churro ” ) because they lay “ Easter eggs ” in shades of grim and greenish .

We purchased a small pocketbook of chick fledgling , a waterer , and we were out of there to set up a chick brooder . At dwelling house , we start thinking that while two hens would render deal of eggs for our family , it ’d awesome if my daughter could sell eggs to family and friends to help ante up for the chicken feed . So , we made another trek down to the provender computer memory and plunk up a Black Sex Link we named “ Darla ” ( remember The Little Rascals ? ) .

In pillow slip anyone is feel like pitiable husband - extraordinaire got rooked into the chicken deal I ’ll have you know that Monday morning after he left for work , I got a phone call from him .

He say , “ Do you think the bird were lovesome enough last night?”(Me ) “ Um , I think so . ”“I mean value , the black one looks smaller than the others and she could be cold . ”(Me ) “ I do n’t think they were cold , they seem okay to me . ”“Because they ’re really fragile . There ’s another visible light up in the bonce if you want to get it . ”(Me again ) “ I really do n’t conceive … ”“Ya know , they looked like they were kinda huddling … ” He say . “I’ll get the other Christ Within . ”

I think he ’s hunky-dory with our new mob members .
