I am constantly tempted by the endearing baby chicks for sale in provender stores at this time of twelvemonth .
It ’s that time again — clock time when I walk into the feed stores in town and see het hold pens occupy with oodles of adorable baby bird .
There they are : little yellow balls of fluff . And little black orb of fluff . And brown balls of bagatelle with stripy fender . No matter their colour , they are the cutest little things on the face of the earth , and I require them . I desire them all .
Of course , reason prevails , and I end up just picking up a baby and cuddling it . I see myself saying “ babe peepers ! Baby Peeping Tom ! ” over and over again like a simple as I cradle that petty chick in my hand .
This take place every yr , but this is the first time I actually walked out of the store and was badly considering buying a few chick .
Over the last two years , I ’ve lost two of my hens . I ’m down to three plus my two cock . The hens do n’t seem to be laying — not even the younger one who should still be bring forth . Not certain what ’s going on but I have n’t gotten eggs in many calendar month .
So I began to question if maybe I should bring a few more hens . One of my dilemmas is that my pot is all bantams , and the babies I see in the feed stores are stock - size chicks . How freakish will that look , to see five bantam roaming around with three jumbo hen watch over close behind ? Will my bantams look like the poultry version of hobbits to the elephantine fauna ?
Also , what will this do to my roosters ’ soul ? Aside from the inevitable fights that will ensue over who gets to be boss over the new hens , what will happen to my roosters ’ ego esteem when they attempt to mate with these monster hen , only to come up there is no way they can attain ?
And what about the pecking order ? If I inaugurate the novel hens as pullet , they will no doubt get bossed around by my three resident biddy . How weird will that be to see my little chickens chasing hens that are twice their sizing ?
Okay , I approximate I could skip the provender entrepot and just order some bantam biddy online . This would eliminate the size of it discrepancy . I would still have the same problem with the roosters fighting , and the newcomers being harass by my resident hens . I ’m not certain what to do about that . If I want to seriously consider expanding my heap , I take to do more research .
In the meantime , I ’ll be visiting the feed stores in town on a regular basis over the next month to get my sister chick fix .
