A small garden changes and grows to become a beautiful space for endless enjoyment
glad Monday GPODers !
I ’m very worked up to start the workweek back in the garden of Suzannah Pugh . Several weeks back , I share a couple photos Suzannah send over in compilation post that featured two other gardens ( check that out here ) . The trivial snipping we got to see of her space was magical , and I was eager to see more . Over the preceding couple hebdomad I was thrilled when I saw a handful of emails hail in from Suzannah , showcasing unlike view of her garden and how they came to be . I finally had the chance to amass all of her submission together , and below is a gorgeous circuit through her small blank space and the change that form it over the years .
Hello ! I ’m Suzannah Dolanc Pugh . I have a .36 acre railway yard in Springfield , Missouri , garden geographical zone 6b .

I wanted to share some photos of what I call my “ Swing Garden . ” This garden was conceive of after drop off a very gravid eloquent maple tree(Acersaccharinum , Zones 3–9).Half of the yard , including the cut and play - set that my child played on day by day went from full shade to full sun . I mourned the loss of the tree diagram for several weeks , and then started to feel a bit of turmoil over produce and imagining a whole new , and very gay quad . We did plant a very declamatory crimson oak to replace the maple , but we wo n’t have tone for many days now . The garden surface area was execute in several form over the next few years .
The sad batch of mulch that was go forth of the maple tree that came down .
The first year after the tree was gone , we institute new trees and had a permanent swing structure and an arbour set up . I know I wanted to make a pollinator garden around the fresh jive structure , so we start with some echinacea , and some anthesis shrubs : Pink ‘ Polka ’ weigela(Weigelaflorida‘Polka ’ , Zones 4–9)and aChinese snowball viburnum(Viburnum macrocephalum , Zones 7–9).The second twelvemonth we added the picket fencing , raised garden beds , five Taylor junipers(Juniperusvirginiana‘Taylor ’ , Zones 3–9),smokebush(Cotinuscoggygria , Zones 4–8),maiden hair grasses(Miscanthussinensis‘Gracillimus ’ , Zones 4–9),‘Color Guard ’ yucca(Yucca filamentosa‘Color Guard ’ , zone 5–10),and herbs , vegetables and cut blossom . The third year we added herbaceous perennial . Salvias , genus Rudbeckia , genus Nepeta , phlox , Lamb ear and many more .

I was reflecting that the schooltime year is starting soon , and I sense almost as blue as this atomic number 27 drab fountain on my patio garden . However , I do palpate a hum of excitement too , and I started thinking about all of the parallel that raising children and horticulture seem to express . tribal chief among the similarity is the perpetual variety . Often there are many variables we ca n’t control , but there are a few important unity we can .
The photo above is of my terrace garden . It was construct with big slabs of Arkansas stone and pea crushed rock . Smaller Arkansas stones are used as stepping Oliver Stone in the foreground . To play up the Co blue of the fountain , I planted ‘ Black and disconsolate ’ Co salvia(Salviaguaranitica‘Black and Blue ’ , Zones 8–10 or as an annual). You might also detect some pops of blue ornamentation hide in the ‘ Cat ’s Meow ’ nepeta(Nepeta× faassenii ‘ Cat ’s Meow ’ , Zones 3–8)and genus Ajuga . The intermixture of blue and yellow ‘ American Gold Rush ’ rudbeckia(Rudbeckia‘American Gold Rush ’ , Zones 3–9)might be my favorite part !
As you’re able to see I have a somewhat low , concrete slab covered terrace , and we decided to amplify the area to make a separate seating area .

We had several reasons for wanting to create a 2d patio arena off of the exist terrace . First of all , a designated fire cavity area is very nice . Until we had this terrace , we sat in our driveway with the firepit and folding chairs . It was fine , but did n’t quite have the aesthetic benefit that gardening can leave ! Another reasons for the second space was to locate a shadier spot for the late good afternoon and early eve hours when we often find ourselves wanting to utilise the terrace . The existing terrace , even with its roof , does n’t keep out that acute , and hot , lower eve sun . switch the novel patio over founder us the welfare of very permeate light and much cool temperatures . The last tally benefit of the area is that it aid to check up our large , very square back cubic yard . The bring Emerald Green arborvitae(Thujaoccidentalis‘Emerald Green ’ , Zones 3–8)and plant margin , makes this patio area sense secluded from the rest of the one thousand .
In the pic above , you could see that the new patio has two oval gardens inside . One ellipse has a redbud tree diagram that we planted when we made the patio . It ’s great enough now it has coral Alexander Graham Bell , ferns and various ground hatch underneath . The second ellipse area is gay enough that I can turn sunny perennials like genus Nepeta , rudbeckia , salvias , and annual zinnias .
You ’ll see I like to expend Co blues and green . I have blue fountains , bird bath , and garden balls . I have greenish and blue ceramic muckle and gullible terrace shock piece of furniture . I ’ve plant blue salvias(‘Black and Blue ’ andSalvia sylvestris‘Caradonna ’ , Zones 4–9)to tie in more of the bluing .

The 2nd oval area is sunny enough that I can originate cheery perennials like nepeta , rudbeckia , sage , and one-year zinnias . I bask having boxwood and maple in pots all twelvemonth long .
Thank you for sharing more of your gorgeous garden with us , Suzannah ! From the little peek we got to see before , I knew there were so many other mythologic sights to see . And I go for this boost more GPOD readers to put forward snatch of their garden . Even if all you may share right now is one photo , I promise the relaxation of the GPOD community is eager to see what you ’re turn !
