Equality State is divide into 10 ground zone . According to the University of Wyoming , soils were derived based on five agent of soil constitution - biota , climate , soil parent textile , time and topography . Soil in Wyoming differs depending on superlative , and includes mesmic at lower elevations and frigid ( 5,000 - 6,500 feet ) , cyric ( 7,500 - 7,800 foot ) and pergelic ( 10,000 feet and above ) .

Zones 1 and 2

Zone 1 includes the Yellowstone plateau where soil is cyric and squiffy . Depending on location , soil in this geographical zone may be coloured , loamy or gravelly , but all are generally rich in nutrients . Dark soil exists in forests ; loamy soil is found in hayfield ; and gravelly sand is found near riverbanks . Zone 2 is east of the Yellowstone plateau and includes the Absaroka mountain range . Soil is similar to zone 1 , but has volcanic parent stuff .

Zones 3 and 4

Zone 3 includes the middle Rocky Mountains and is of the cryic , udic ( go for some wet ) , and aquic ( hold moisture well ) varieties . grunge is loamy bony to all right loam over sandy or arenaceous pinched soil , and may be wry . Zone 4 includes the Bighorn Basin and soil is similar to zona 3 , but can be coarse . Soil is mesic or aridic .

Zones 5 and 6

Zone 5 includes the Powder River Basin as well as a the northern Great Plains . Soil is classified as either mesic or aridic , and is broadly speaking loamy and hunky-dory in grain . Zone 6 includes the Black Hills and mountains and soils vary from mesic , to udic to ustic ( give less moisture than udic filth , but more than aridic ) . Soil grain is generally fine and loam - like . In some field , grease may have sandstone , siltstone , and shale mixed in .

Zones 7 and 8

zona 7 includes southeastern Wyoming and the northerly Great Plains . Soil is classified as icy , aridic and mesic . stain is all right in grain and poorly formed . geographical zone 8 includes Medicine Bow and the Laramie Mountains . It is classified as cryic , udic , and aquic , and is usually a fine but poorly run out soil .

Zones 9 and 10

Zone 9 include the Laramie and Wind River river basin as well as some intermountain basins . Laramie , the plate of the University of Wyoming , is located in this geographical zone . Soil is classify as frozen and aridic and the grain is okay . Some areas have bedrock under the soil bottom . Zone 10 includes the Green River catchment basin and an intermountain lavatory . Like geographical zone 9 , the soil is assort as frigid and aridic and is standardised to soil in zone 3 to 5 but is frigid .
